Without an accurate diagnosis, it’s difficult to find an effective and specific treatment for the pain. We use diagnostic studies, physical examination, a detailed history of the pain (including duration of symptoms, locations and radiation of pain, signs of muscle weakness, sensory deficit, and any loss of bladder or bowel control) along with careful evaluation of past medical records, and past medication and treatments.
With an accurate diagnosis, it’s much easier to make an effective treatment plan for pain. Oftentimes, the patients that have been to our clinic have been to multiple physicians who have looked at parts of the person but don’t take the whole person into account. As pain management specialists, we take a comprehensive approach to the patient. A comprehensive evaluation often yields the answers to complex diagnostic problems that have eluded other clinicians.
If there are additional diagnostic studies that are required such as MRI scans, CT scans, x-rays, EMG nerve conduction studies or other studies, we order those and then add the results to the medical database. Basically, we are on the hunt for the specific pain generator in the body.
“As pain management specialists, we take a comprehensive approach to the patient. “
The concept of the pain generator is a concept that has recently added diagnostic specificity to the field of pain management. The concept is that there are number of structures that can cause pain. Pain generators can be identified and accurately diagnosed by injecting local anesthetic which numbs the nerves and reduces transmission of the pain signals. We can assess whether the injection relieves the pain or not. If it does relieve the pain, then we can tell with certainty that the pain is caused by that structure. If there is no pain relief, then that structure can be ruled out as a pain generator. If there is partial pain relief, then that leads us to believe that that structure may be responsible for some part of the pain but not all of the pain. If there is complete relief of pain then we may well have determined the pain generator.
Accurate diagnosis is the key to identifying a specific and effective plan for treatment of pain.

Comprehensive Pain Evaluation Process
The comprehensive pain evaluation process at the Cleveland Pain Relief Center is designed to ensure that every aspect of a patient's condition is thoroughly assessed. This includes taking a detailed medical history, understanding the patient's pain symptoms, and conducting a physical examination to identify potential pain generators.
In addition to standard evaluations, our specialists may recommend advanced diagnostic studies such as MRI scans, CT scans, and nerve conduction studies to gather more information. This holistic approach allows us to pinpoint the root causes of pain and tailor treatment plans that are specific to each patient's needs.
Understanding Pain Generators
Pain generators are the underlying issues causing discomfort in patients, and identifying them is crucial for effective pain management. At the Cleveland Pain Relief Center, our team utilizes various diagnostic tools to determine the specific sources of pain, which can range from musculoskeletal problems to nerve-related issues.
By performing targeted injections and other diagnostic procedures, we can confirm the presence of pain generators. This evidence-based approach not only aids in diagnosis but also enhances the effectiveness of subsequent treatments, ensuring patients receive the most appropriate care for their conditions.
Personalized Treatment Plans
Once a comprehensive evaluation has been completed and pain generators identified, our specialists work closely with each patient to develop personalized treatment plans. These plans may include a combination of medication, physical therapy, and interventional procedures tailored to the individual’s specific pain conditions and lifestyle.
Our goal is to empower patients by providing them with options that not only alleviate pain but also improve their overall quality of life. We believe that a personalized approach fosters better outcomes and encourages active participation in the treatment process.
Patient-Centered Care Philosophy
At the Cleveland Pain Relief Center, our patient-centered care philosophy emphasizes compassion and understanding throughout the pain management journey. We recognize that each patient's experience with pain is unique, and we strive to create a supportive environment where patients feel heard and valued.
This philosophy extends beyond just treating symptoms; it encompasses building strong relationships with our patients, educating them about their conditions, and involving them in decision-making processes regarding their treatment. By prioritizing patient needs and preferences, we aim to foster trust and enhance the overall effectiveness of our care.
